How to make a bar chart
- Copy the category column (region, product, etc.) together with the value columns.
- Paste into the data table (paste on a column header to use the first line as column names).
- Choose the chart type, category column and value columns, and an aggregation method if needed.
- Turn on 'Show values on bars', press Draw, then right-click the chart to save or copy it as an image.
Choosing a bar chart type
Vertical and horizontal bar charts compare one or more values per category. Horizontal bars work better when category names are long. A grouped bar chart puts several value columns side by side per category, and stacked bar charts show each category's total and its composition in one bar.
Aggregating by category
If the same category appears in several rows, choose mean, sum, count, max or min to combine them into one bar per category, in the order the categories first appear. With 'None' each row becomes its own bar.
How to read a bar chart
- The automatic interpretation names the category with the highest value for each series.
- Sort or compare carefully when bars are close - small differences may not be meaningful.
- For composition, a stacked chart shows totals; for comparing individual parts, a grouped chart is clearer.
Frequently asked questions
Can I make a stacked bar chart?
Yes. Choose 'Stacked Vertical Bar Chart' or 'Stacked Horizontal Bar Chart'. Negative values are stacked separately below zero.
Can I show the value on each bar?
Yes. Turn on 'Show values on bars'. Stacked charts show the value in the middle of each segment.
What if a category appears in several rows?
Choose an aggregation method (mean, sum, count, max, min) to combine them into one bar per category.
Is my data sent to a server?
No. Everything is processed inside your browser and nothing is transmitted or stored.
